The Indian National Congress (INC) has released its first list of candidates on the 70 seats for Delhi Assembly Elections. The National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT-Delhi) will be going into polls on the 8th of February whereas the results of the same will be announced on 11th of February, 2020. The list came a day after BJP released its list of 57 candidates.
After the meeting of Congress’ Central Election Committee with interim party Chief Sonia Gandhi at her residence, the party finalised and released the names of 54 candidates for the upcoming elections. Several top Congress leaders, including Delhi unit chief Subhash Chopra, party’s Delhi in charge PC Chacko, Ahmed Patel and KC Venugopal, attended the meeting.
INC has fielded former Union Minister Krishna Tirath from Patel Nagar and former Delhi Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely from Gandhi Nagar. Tirath will be up against Raaj Kumar Anand of AAP and Pravesh Ratan of BJP while Lovely is going to face Naveen Choudhary of AAP and sitting MLA and ex-AAP leader Anil Kumar Bajpai of BJP.
Ex-AAP leader and MLA from Badarpur seat Alka Lamba is going to contest the elections again but this time from the Congress’ side. Lamba switched sides last year after being at odds with the Kejriwal led party for some time. She’ll be contesting against Prahlad Singh Sawhney of AAP and Suman Kumar Gupta of BJP.
Party’s Election campaign committee chairman Kirti Azad’s wife Poonam Azad will also be contesting for the first time from Sangam Vihar seat against Dinesh Mohaniya of AAP. Congress has fielded senior leaders Haroon Yusuf, Rajesh Lilothia and Mateen Ahmad from Balliamaran, Mangolpuri and Seelampur seats respectively. Moreover, former state minister Ashok Kumar Walia will be fighting the election from Krishna Nagar seat.
When AAP released its list of candidates for the Delhi Election, one notable name that was side-lined was that of Adarsh Shastri who is the grandson of former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri and had left a high paying job at Apple Inc. to join AAP. He was replaced by Poorvanchali bigshot Mahabal Mishra’s son Vinay Mishra. Meanwhile, Shastri quit AAP and joined Congress in presence of party chief Subhash Chopra and PC Chacko and has been fielded him from the Dwarka seat.
Much like the BJP, even the Congress has not yet fielded any candidate from the New Delhi constituency against incumbent Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. However, from the Patparganj seat, Laksham Rawat will be up against Deputy CM Manish Sisodia.
