Okhla is a colony situated near Okhla Barrage in Delhi. It came into existence as a Vidhan Sabha Assembly constituency in the year 1993. Situated in the East Delhi district. It has about 2,73,464 eligible voters. With the Delhi Assembly Election 2020 scheduled next month, Okhla will undergo the voting process on 8 February 2020. Okhla is amongst the oldest villages of Delhi, hosting the Okhla canal made by Britishers in 1874 which is now known as Okhla Head. Delhi Election 2020 will be the eighth election taking place in this constituency, the year 2009 being a by-election. The Delhi Assembly election result 2020 will be announced on 11 February. This is a Muslim majority constituency of Delhi, some parts of it severely lacking development.
Candidates in the battle for Delhi Election 2020
Amantullah Khan of Aam Aadmi Party, Braham Singh from BJP, and Parvez Hashmi from the Indian National Congress are in the election round from Okhla for the Delhi Assembly Election 2020. Amantullah Khan is also the sitting MLA of AAP from this constituency, he had won the Delhi Assembly Election 2015. Over the past five years, the AAP government has provided potable water lines to this area, however, it does not have water supply from Delhi Jal Board. CCTV cameras are installed and electricity bills of the residents have reduced, thanks to the freebie of Arvind Kejriwal.
Although development is a factor, Muslim majority population of this constituency makes Congress Candidate Parvez Hashmi a strong candidate for this seat. The Muslim community is disappointed with Aam Aadmi Party for not taking a stand against the Citizenship Amendment Act and with the BJP for bringing it. Parvez Hashmi was a four-time winner in this constituency, therefore Congress’s anti CAA stand paving way for his victory.
Past Election Performance
As we know, Amantullah Khan of Aam Aadmi Party had won this constituency in Delhi Assembly Election 2015. The current BJP candidate Braham Singh was a runner up. The voter turnout in this are was 60%. There was a margin of 38.73% votes between the winner and the runner up. The Congress candidate from Okhla for Delhi Election 2020 had won the first election in this constituency on a Janata Dal ticket in 1993. He was re-elected in 1998, 2003, and 2008 being associated with Congress. Increasing the possibility of him winning Okhla seat in Delhi Election 2020.
There would be 252 polling stations in Okhla constituency for the Delhi Assembly Election 2020. The Delhi Election result 2020 will be announced on February 11.
