Back in 2015, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party had sent a shockwave in Indian politics by winning 67 out of 70 seats of the Delhi Assembly. The stakes were high for the Kejriwal government after such a massive mandate. It was the long list of promises and anti-incumbency for the Congress government that paved way for Kejriwal. With Delhi Assembly Election 2020 drawing closer, now is the time for Kejriwal to provide a report of promise fulfilments. Let’s analyze if Arvind Kejriwal scores well to be promoted to the next term.
Education: Aam Aadmi Party is intensely highlighting the achievements of its government over the past five years. The major improvement brought by Kejriwal Government is for the education sector. Under his regime, the funds allotted for education, account for nearly a quarter of the state’s budget. By looking at the photos, the new classrooms built in the government schools are a match for the top private schools. This development has directly affected the future of the coming generation. Government schools have outperformed the private ones in terms of results. So improving education in Delhi is the top achievement of Kejriwal government ahead of the Delhi election 2020.
Water and Electricity: Kejriwal government has brought down the electricity bills by up to 50% for the people of Delhi. It offers a subsidy on the bills till 400 units and had also reduced the electricity tariffs. After coming to power, Kejriwal had also offered free water up to 20,000 liters to every house. Both these decisions have directly affected the livelihood of a significant portion of Delhi’s population. With free water and electricity, Kejriwal has achieved to make the standard of living cheaper for Delhi’s people.
Healthcare: Kejriwal Government has advanced the health sector too. The landmark project of Mohalla clinics has received applauds internationally. There are about 158 Mohalla Clinics in Delhi that provide basic health services at extremely low cost. AAP has promised to raise this number during the Delhi Assembly Election 2020. Kejriwal Government is also acknowledged with improving the condition of Government hospitals in the city.
Others: Some other achievements of the Kejriwal Government include improving security by installing CCTVs. Providing free bus rides to women, modern sanitation technologies, and attempt to tackle pollution by introducing the odd-even scheme.
All the achievements listed above are picture-perfect for the re-election of the Kejriwal Government for the Delhi Elections 2020. The Modi wave has subdued and people vote on the basis of Local development for state elections. Arvind Kejriwal has fulfilled most of the promises made by his party. Although the Delhi election 2015 was much easier than today since there was anti-incumbency against Congress, AAP may get fewer seats during this election but has higher prospects of returning to power. Abrogation of Article 370 and caste arithmetic might help BJP a bit for the Delhi elections 2020. Congress, however, has very less standing in the upcoming election. IANS-Cvoter survey has predicted that AAP may win about 59 seats for the Delhi Assembly Election 2020.
