The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), on Monday, released its list of candidates on all of 70 constituencies for the upcoming Delhi Assembly Elections 2020. The National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT-Delhi) will be going into polls on the 8th of February whereas the results of the same will be announced on 11th of February, 2020.
Looking at the released list, 46 of the sitting MLAs have retained their tickets while 24 new faces have managed to secure a ticket this time around. Among the 24 new names, 15 will be replacing the sitting MLAs while 9 of them will be filling the vacant seats. It should be recalled that AAP had disqualified five of its candidates for having association with other parties.
Incumbent Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Deputy Manish Sisodia would be contesting from New Delhi and Patparganj seats respectively, for the third time now. Both Kejriwal and Sisodia have won these seats for the last two assembly elections.
In a rather shocking turn of events, the party has decided to field ex-Congressman Vinay Mishra, son of Purvanchali bigwig Mahabal Mishra, from Dwarka seat instead of sitting MLA Adarsh Shastri. Adarsh is the grandson of former PM and Congress senior Lal Bahadur Shastri and this decision could prove to be controversial as he had left a high paying job at Apple Inc. to join Kejriwal’s party.
Another debatable decision could be the fielding of Shoiab Iqbal, another ex-Congressman from Moti Mahal instead of sitting MLA Asim Ahmed Khan. As it happens, all four of the Congress leaders who joined AAP in recent times have been given a ticket this time.
In a first, Atishi Marlena and Raghav Chadha will be contesting from Kalkaji and Rajinder Nagar seats respectively. Atishi will be replacing MLA Avatar Singh while Raghav will be replacing MLA Vijendra Garg. A total of 8 female candidates have been given the ticket by the AAP this time, 2 more than last time.
AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal congratulated the candidates via Twitter, writing “Best wishes to all. Don’t be complacent. Work very hard. People have lot of faith in the AAP and you. God bless.”
