Chandni Chowk Vidhan Sabha Constituency is the smallest one in terms of the number of voters. It is one of the 70 Legislative Assemblies of Delhi, having approximately 1.1 Lakh voters. Delhi Election 2020 for this assembly will take place on 8th February 2020. This is a ‘High Prestige’ constituency for the political parties since it is dominated by business communities. It consists of popular Delhi markets such as Khari Baoli, Darya Ganj, Faiz Bazar, Kinari Bazar, Nai Sarak, and Naya Bazar. Chandni Chowk constituency is located in Central Delhi district, also a part of Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha Constituency. There is no sitting MLA in this seat since Aam Aadmi Party’s winner for Delhi Assembly election 2015- Alka Lamba had joined INC in 2019. She was disqualified as an MLA by Delhi Assembly speaker.
Political Battle for 2020
Prior to 2015, Chandni Chowk has had only BJP and INC MLAs. The currently fielded candidates for the Delhi Assembly election 2020 are Parlad Singh Sawhney from AAP, Suman Kumar Gupta from BJP, and Alka Lamba from INC. The election history and turncoat records have made it difficult to analyze the stronger candidate for this constituency.
Before joining AAP in 2015, Alka Lamba was a member of Congress. She again switched back to Congress in 2019. On the other hand, INC’s four-time winner MLA Parlad Singh Sawhney has joined Aam Aadmi Party last year. Whereas Suman Kumar Gupta of BJP was a runner up in the Delhi Assembly election 2015. If we consider the past distinction of votes and that the victory of Alka Lamba in 2015 was a mere result of the AAP wave of Delhi, Sawhney contesting on AAP’s ticket has a possibility of winning this seat for the Delhi Election 2020. However, this constituency will witness a tough battle amongst AAP, BJP, and INC. Delhi Assembly Election result 2020 will provide a clue about voters’ choice between the party and the candidate.
