About Kulgam Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) Constituency

Kulgam is a small town in the district by the same name in Jammu and Kashmir. The word Kulgam is a combination of two words, kul meaning clan and gram meaning village. The town is famous for the religious saint, Sayed Simnan Sahib. The place is known for the rice production. The assembly constituency of Kulgam belongs to Anantnag parliamentary constituency. The seat has been occupied by CPI(M) since 1996. Mohmad Yousuf Rather of CPI(M) won the 2008 assembly elections and is the present MLA. He defeated Nazir Ahmad Laway of PDP. Rather bagged 17175 votes as against Laway's 16939 votes.
