About Kargil Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) Constituency

Kargil is a town in district by the same name in Jammu and kashmir. It is also the district headquarters. The town was previously known as Purig. The assembly constituency of Kargil falls under Ladakh parliamentary constituency. The JKNC occupied the seat from 1977 to 2002. However in 2002 the party lost to an independent candidate. In 2008 assembly elections, JKNC managed to get back the seat. Qamar Ali Akhoon of JKNC won the elections and is the current MLA. He defeated Haji Nissar Ali, an independent candidate and the 2002 elections winner. Akhoon secured 22935 votes as against Ali's 17635 votes.
