About Kharagpur-Sadar Assembly Constituency

Kharagpur-Sadar is constituency No. 224 of West Bengal. It is situated in Pashchim Medinipur district. It is part of Lok Sabha constituency No. 34, which is Medinipur. It is an open constituency.

According to the Election Commission of India, this constituency has 1,95,162 registered voters. It has 1,00,036 male and 95,126 female registered voters.

In the 2011 assembly elections, Kharagpur Sadar seat went to the Congress party. As many as eight candidates contested from this seat, out of which six had to forfeit their deposit. Gyan Singh Sohanpal of Indian National Congress defeated his nearest contender, Anil Kumar Das of CPI(M), by a convincing margin of 32,369 votes to win this seat. While Sohanpal secured 75,425 votes, Das got 43,056. The voter turnout was 70.78%.
