Uttarakhand Assembly Election 2017

Elections in the hill state of Uttarakhand were held on February 15, 2017 in a single phase. A total of 75,12,559 electorate participated in the elections.A total of 637 candidates contested elections for the 70-member legislative assembly. The election commission had arranged for 10,854 polling booths in Uttarakhand where voting took place. Around 65% voting took place according to the revised figures of the Election commission.

It was primarily a contest between the incumbent congress government and the challenger Bharatiya Janata Party, though Bahujan Samaj Party also has significant presence in some pockets. The results would be announced on March 11.

The hill state of Uttarakhand came into existence as an independent state on 9 November, 2000 under the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000. Before that, it was part of Uttar Pradesh. The state was named Uttaranchal at the time of its formation. Its legislative assembly had 30 members who were erstwhile members of Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly. The first official elections to Uttarakhand legislative assembly was held in February, 2002. Uttaranchal's name was changed to Uttarakhand on 21 December, 2006. The assembly comprises 71 members out of which 70 are directly elected and one member is nominated from the Anglo-Indian community. A normal tenure of the Assembly is 5 years until dissolved sooner.
