About Shivpal Singh Yadav

Shivpal Singh Yadav is an Indian politician hailing from the state of Uttar Pradesh. He has been associated with the Samajwadi Party for almost two decades now. He was a cabinet minister in the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government before resigning from the post in 2016.


Personal Background

Shivpal Singh Yadav was born on 6 April, 1955 in Saifai village, Etawah district. He is a younger brother of Samajwadi Party President Mulayam Singh Yadav. His father's name is Sughar Singh and mother's name is Murti Devi. He completed his schooling from Jain Inter College, Karhal Mainpuri in 1974. He did his graduation from Karm Kshetra Post Graduate College of Kanpur University in Etawah in 1976. He also obtained a degree in bachelor of physical education from University of Lucknow in 1977.


Shivpal Yadav married Sarla Yadav in 1981. The couple has two children: daughter Dr.Anubha Yadav is a medical practitioner by profession and son Aditya Yadav is a political leader currently serving as an elected chairman of the Uttar Pradesh cooperative Federation.

 

Political Career of Shivpal Singh Yadav

Shivpal Singh Yadav's initiation into politics began at a very young age when his elder brother, an ardent follower of Ram Manohar Lohia, introduced him to the Uttar Pradesh political movement through various rallies and protest assemblies. After getting inspired by Lohia’s ideas and beliefs, Shivpal took to the socialist leader's ideology and proved his loyalty to Mulayam Singh Yadav and his mettle as a notable leader of pro-Lohia ideology.

Shivpal Singh Yadav was elected as the president of the district Sehkari bank in 1988 and successfully completed his tenure in 1991. He took over as the president of district panchayat in 1995. He contested the 13th Uttar Pradesh assembly elections successfully from Jaswant Nagar seat in Etawah district. He also got appointed as the general secretary of the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh. He took over as the president of the party's state unit in 2009 when the then state president passed away. In acknowledgement of his role and contribution to the party, he was appointed as the leader of the opposition. He proved his mettle in this role as well by debating on issues related to poverty, women's empowerment and upliftment of the downtrodden.
