Prior to the Lok Sabha elections, Mamata Banerjee‘s party Trinamool Congress got a big setback when MP Soumitra Khan joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday. After meeting with BJP President Amit Shah, announcement was made in a press conference. In the presence of Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Mukul Roy, party general secretary Arun Singh provided the BJP membership to Soumitra Khan. Soumitra was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha from Vishnupur constituency in 2014. Before this, Soumitra Khan was a legislator from Ketulpur.
After joining the BJP, Trinamool Congress MP Saumitra Khan fiercely criticized the Mamta Banerjee’s government of West Bengal. He blamed the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said, “There is no democracy in the state. People cannot vote and there’s police rule in the state. He said that he believes in PM Narendra Modi like many other youths who will make changes in the state.
The BJP claims that besides Soumitra Khan, six more MPs will be included in the BJP from TMC. Although the BJP has refused to provide names of these MPs as of now, it is believed that names Arpita Ghosh and Satabdi Roy can be included. According to the sources, all MPs of Mukul Roy, MP, who joined the BJP last year, are considered close. MP Mukul Roy is now the BJP chief from West Bengal.
Soumitra Khan had met Amit Shah before joining the BJP. According to the sources, Soumitra Khan wanted to decide whether or not the BJP was giving him ticket in the coming elections. The Bengal BJP believes that joining the party of Soumitra Khan will strengthen the party. Right now, in West Bengal the BJP is continuously getting new leaders. It will be interesting to see how well it will be for the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections.
