  • Puducherry CM Narayansamy Wins Nellithope Assembly Seat
    Congress member and Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy has won the Nellithope assembly seat in the union territory. He faced a stiff competition from the AIADMK in the bypolling that was held on 19 November, 2016. Narayanasamy is a Lok Sabha MP. He was required to become member of the Puducherry legislative assembly within six months of being sworn in as the chief minister of the union territory. He was appointed the chief minister after the Congress managed to win the Puducherry assembly elections held earlier this year.

  • V. Narayanasamy Sworn-in As Puducherry CM
    AICC general secretary and former Union minister of state V. Narayanasamy took oath of office as the Chief Minister of Puducherry today. Besides him, five other Congress MLAs were sworn-in as ministers. Recently-appointed Puducherry Governor Kiran Bedi administered the oath of office and secrecy to the six-member team at the historic Gandhi Thidal on Beach Road at 12 P.M.

    The Congress emerged as the single largest party in Puducherry. The Congress is now all set to form the government in the Union Territory along with its ally Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Of the 30-member Puducherry assembly, the Congress won 15 seats and DMK bagged two seats. The ruling AINRC could get only 8 seats, while AIADMK bagged four seats. One seat went to an independent candidate.

    Over 9.2 lakh voters of Puducherry decide the fate of 344 candidates today from 913 polling stations in 30 constituencies. 37-year-old Jesiliya S. is the first and only transgender candidate. She is contesting this election from Orleanpet constituency. Polling was peaceful in sensitive polling booths at Kariamanickam in Nettapakkam constituency. Polling was affected in some regions of Karaikal due to heavy rains and power cuts. The Congress party has requested the poll panel to extend polling time in Molapakkam to upto 9 P.M. The turnout was 80.17% till 5 P.M.

  • Puducherry elections: 344 candidates in fray
    Puducherry will witness 344 candidates, including 97 independents, battling it out for wining the Assembly polls on 16 May. On Monday, 22 candidates withdrew their nominations. According to Puducherry Chief Electoral officer, V Candavelou, out of 344 candidates, 322 were men, 21 women and one under 'other gender' category. The total voters strength in Puducherry is 9,41,935.

  • Demand for Statehood Becomes Moot Point Ahead of Puducherry Assembly Polls
    The demand of statehood looks set to become the single most important issue in Puducherry Assembly elections this year with political parties having different takes on it. Ruling party All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) is insisting on full-fledged statehood so that the government is empowered to take decisions and implement them fast. On the other hand, main Opposition party Congress contends that statehood will not be sufficient and that the Centre should instead grant ‘Special Category’ status to Puducherry. Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister for State, V. Narayanasamy, said that Special Category’ status alone would ensure that around 90 per cent of the budget requirements are met through grants and the remainder would have to be mobilised locally.

  • AAP leader held under 66A hails court ruling
    "Technically I am a free man now. I am very happy," said AAP leader R. Ravi Srinivasan of Puducherry after the Supreme Court struck down section 66A of the IT Act on Tuesday. Srinivasan, who is also a businessman, was booked in 2012 under the section on a complaint by Karti P. Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P. Chidambaram. Reliving the moments of his arrest by Puducherry Police, Srinivasan told IANS: "It was around 5 a.m. on October 30 when policemen knocked at my door. I was taken into custody, and my family didn't know for a long time about my whereabouts." He was let out on bail the same evening. "The case against me is still on and the next hearing is slated for March 27," he said. Srinivasan, the secretary of the Puducherry unit of the Aam Aadmi Party, had tweeted reports he had read about Chidambaram, leading to his arrest. Source: IANS
