  • Six new governors appointed
    President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday filled up vacancies of governors in four northeastern states while shifting two governors. According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan comminique, V. Shanmuganthan has now been appointed as the governor of Meghalaya whereas Arunachal Pradesh Governor, Lt. Gen. Nirbhay Sharma (retd.) has been transferred to Mizoram for the remainder of his term which lasts till 2018. The seventh governor to be named for the northeastern state since July 2014, he will be succeeded in Itanagar by J.P. Rajkhowa. Meghalaya and Mizoram were currently being held as additional charges by West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi. Source: IANS

  • Mizoram CM pays tribute to policemen killed in attack
    Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, his cabinet colleagues, legislators and officials on Sunday paid their last respects to the three Mizoram policemen who were gunned down by militants on Saturday. Announcing an ex-gratia payment of Rs.7 lakh for the families of each of the slain policemen, the chief minister said that security forces have intensified combing operations to nab the militants. "The government and the security forces would give a befitting reply to the challenge thrown by the HPC-D who killed the three policemen," he told reporters. Source: IANS

  • Meghalaya on railways' map
    Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Thursday said that Meghalaya has joined the railway network and Arunachal Pradesh has been linked with the national capital. "We are committed to provide rail connectivity to northeastern states and Meghalaya has been finally brought on the railways' map," the minister said in his budget speech in the Lok Sabha. "Arunachal Pradesh has been finally connected to Delhi," he said. In 2014, the central government flagged off the first passenger train service in Meghalaya connecting Mendipathar in the state with Guwahati in Assam. A project to convert the Bhairabi-Sairang track in Mizoram into broad gauge was also initiated. Source: IANS

  • Modi wishes Arunachal, Mizoram on statehood day
    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday greeted the people of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram on their statehood day. Extending his greetings to the people of Arunachal Pradesh, the prime minister said: "Warmest greetings on the statehood day of your state. Arunachal Pradesh is a land known for its natural beauty and its warm people. I am committed to ensuring all possible support that enhances the state's development journey." Statehood day was conferred on Arunachal Pradesh on Feb 20, 1987. Wishing his "sisters and brothers" of Mizoram, Modi in his message said: "Greetings on Mizoram's statehood day.   • Rajnath to visit Manipur, Tripura Saturday
    Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Manipur and Tripura on Saturday to review the law and order situation and assess the repatriation of tribal refugees, sheltered in Tripura for more than 17 years, an official said in Agartala on Wednesday. "The union home minister will visit Manipur on Saturday and hold a series of meetings with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and senior security officials in Imphal to review the situation in the militancy ravaged state," an official of Tripura government said. From Imphal, the home minister will then arrive in Tripura and visit some Border Security Force posts. "He will then meet (Tripura Chief Minister) Manik Sarkar in Agartala and (Mizoram Chief Minister) Lal Thanhawla to chalk out a plan to repatriate the tribal refugees to Mizoram," the official said.   • 160 northeast youths to join Delhi Police: Rijiju
    Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday announced that 160 youths from northeast states would be inducted into Delhi Police. Rijiju made the announcement while attending a meeting with senior officials at Delhi Police headquarters, considering the increasing number of racial attacks against people from northeastern states in Delhi. Rijiju said that 10 male and 10 female police officers will be inducted in Delhi Police from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. At pPresent, only 39 policemen from northeastern states are serving with Delhi Police. Of these policemen, 10 are Indian Police Service officers while the rest are either constables, head constables or inspectors. Source: IANS

  • New chief secretary for Mizoram
    Lalmalsawma, who was working as a principal secretary with the Delhi government, has taken over charge as Mizoram's new chief secretary, an official said here on Saturday. "Lalmalsawma took the charge as Mizoram's chief secretary on Friday after the superannuation of L.     Gujarat Governor Kamla Beniwal, who had an uneasy relationship with Narendra Modi when he was Gujarat chief minister, was shifted to Mizoram in a minor reshuffle of governors. Rajasthan Governor Margaret Alva, who is due to finish her term in about a month, has been given additional responsibility of the state.
