  • Gujarat Assembly elections: Not in race for CM's post, says Ahmed Patel
    The only Muslim parliamentarian from Gujarat, Ahmed Patel has brushed aside any speculations of him being the Chief Ministerial candidate of the Congress party. Patel has represented Gujarat seven times in the Parliament. Recently, he startled everybody with his victory in the Gujarat Rajya Sabha elections after defeating BJP's Balwant Singh. He has even brushed aside rumors of him leading the party in Gujarat. Patel told media that right now the priority is to keep the house in order and suggested that currently the party has not thought of any chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming elections.

  • Shankersinh Vaghela, the opposition leader, quits assembly, joins BJP's 'B Team'

The senior leader of the Congress party and former Union Minister during UPA-I government Shankersinh Vaghela quits from the Congress party and resigns as the Leader of Opposition from Gujarat assembly. It is reported that Vaghela had been at loggerheads with the party for not presenting him as the chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming polls. According to Shankersinh Vaghela, ahead of the assembly polls, some leaders of the party are conspiring against him. In the recent Gujarat Rajya Sabha elections, Vaghela voted for BJP and not Congress. Vaghela informed that he would not join any party be it BJP, Congress, NCP, AAP, any other party or any new party per say. Rather he would remain inactive in politics and work for the growth, development and progress of Gujarat.

  • Electronic Voting Machines To Have Paper Trail In Gujarat Assembly Polls
    In the light of the recent events, Election Commission said that for the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections it would use EVMs with VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail). In an affidavit to the Supreme Court of India, the Election Commission of India (EC) has said that for conducting the upcoming Gujarat assembly polls completely with EVMs with paper trail, it would require 73,500 VVPAT machines by September. The VVPAT machine enables voter to verify their votes by dispensing paper proofs. The Election Commission of India requires 70,000 units for conducting the upcoming Gujarat Assembly Polls. Currently the EC has 53,500 VVPAT units. The delivery of 48,000 VVPAT units are expected to be supplied by BEL and ECIL to the Election Commission of India by August 31st, 2017 and another 25,500 VVPAT units are expected to be delivered by September, 2017.

  • Prime Minister to visit his home state of Gujarat
    As the Uttar Pradesh goes to the seventh phase of election today, prime minister will be shifting his attention to his home state of Gujarat which goes to elections later this year. He is scheduled to arrive in his home state on Tuesday. In a busy program in Gujarat prime minister will visit Surat, Somnath, Gandhinagar and Bharuch. He will be addressing public meetings in Surat and will be meeting party officers in a dinner hosted by Gujarat Chief minister Vijay Rupani. The prime minister will also visit ONGC plant in and inaugurate a cable bridge in Dahej built over Narmada River.

  • Aam Aadmi Party gearing up for Gujarat elections
    The Aam Aadmi Party is gearing up to fight the Gujarat elections to be held later this year. The party spokesperson has said that it would be holding convention of party workers in Gujarat to prepare them for the elections in the state. .   • Both BJP, Congress Claim Win in Gujarat Gram Panchayat Polls
    Results for 2,891 of the 8,624 gram panchayats in Gujarat, which went to polls on December 27, were declared today. Both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress have claimed their respective victories in the Panchayat polls. At least two incidents of clashes were reported between groups of rival candidates in Vadodara and Banskantha soon after the results started tricking in. Gram Panchayat polls are, however, not fought on party symbols as candidates need to fight on their personal capacity and each voter is required to cast two votes, one to elect sarpanch and another for electing panchayat member for his ward.

  • Voter Turnout 80% in Gujarat Gram Panchayat Polls
    The Gujarat State Election Commission said in a press release that the voter turnout registered in the state panchayat polls held yesterday was 80.12 per cent. Polling was held to elect members and sarpanchs in 8,624 Gram panchayats across the state. Voting was largely peaceful barring a few small incidents. Counting votes will be held tomorrow. According to the datat shared by the SEC, the tribal district of Narmada recorded the highest turnout of 87.45 per cent while Bhavnagar recorded the lowest with 70.47 per cent. Around 1.20 lakh candidates were in the fray for 53,116 wards across the state, whereas 26,800 candidates contested on 8,527 seats of Sarpanch. Total number of registered voters for the polls stood at over 1.65 crore including 79.6 lakh women. A re-election is being held today on six different seats because of some procedural irregularities and misprints of some ballot papers during the polling yesterday.

  • BJP Sweeps Gujarat Local Body Polls
    Rubbishing all speculations over the possibility of a negative political fallout for the BJP as a result of its demonetisation policy, the party scored a formidable victory in two municipalities and one taluka (block) panchayat elections apart from the by-elections in 11 municipalities, seven district panchayats and 15 taluka panchayat seats. The BJP won 41 out of 44 seats in Vapi in Valsad district and 27 out of 28 seats in Kanakpur-Kansad (Surat) municipalities. It won 18 out of 22 seats in Gondal taluka Panchayat. The district panchayat by-election results have not caused any major upset for the party either as five out of the seven voted for BJP. The party has secured victory in five talukas while the Congress has won four. Elections on the remaining seats have been postponed due to technical issues.

  • Gujarat Local Bodies Polls: BJP Wins 15 Municipalities, Congress 8
    The BJP has secured 15 out of the 27 municipalities while the Congress has bagged eight in the latest round of Gujarat local body elections. The NCP and Samajwadi Party have got one municipality each. There was a hung verdict in the remaining two. Elections were held last Sunday for 660 seats. The voter turnout was about 75%.     With more than half its population of 63.8 million going to the polls on November 22 and 29, the elections to 323 local self-government bodies in Gujarat will be a major popularity test for Chief Minister Anandiben Patel. Anandiben Patel will face her first full-scale election after taking over as chief minister from her mentor and now Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2014. There were some assembly and local body by-elections last year, which produced a mixed bag of results. The local body elections will be held with the state's first woman chief minister in office for close to two years. The term of the present state assembly expires in December 2017.     Gujarat Governor O P Kohli has signed the Gujarat Local Authorities Laws Bill makes voting compulsory in the state.The bill passed by the then Modi government in the state was pending before the Governor because Kamla Beniwal had refused to sign it contending that making exercise of voting compulsory was violation of the article 21 of the constitution.The bill states that anyone who does not vote in the local municipal and panchayat elections will be liable for penal action and punishment.The bill was first introduced in the state assembly in December 2009 and passed by majority vote as the opposition Congress had opposed it. Gujarat will have municipal and panchayat elections in 2015. "Now, the state government will frame rules regarding penal action against those who don't exercise their franchise in the local elections," a state government official said.(News Reports)
