The Congress has shown a significant improvement from the last 2012 elections and even fared well in the rural section of the state.

Senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil stated that they could have formed the government and they have come a long way since they have reduced the BJP win to a 2-digit seat victory.

  • BJP Win Through Western Media's Lens
While the local media is overwhelmed with headlines related to Gujarat results and BJP win, western media is not too far behind either. The New York Times implied the saffron party had a mighty win. The Times also called the party a formidable political force which won despite the aggressive campaigning by the opposition.

The saffron party which aimed high at 150 seat win in Gujarat polls, could manage only 99 seats out of 182 assembly seats. The CNBC called the win a 'rocky victory' and even linked the low seat count with voters' anger over issues like GST.

He also implied that Gujarat can now see through the propaganda of Modi's model.

Senior BJP leader, Prakash Javadekar, however, countered the Gandhi scion's remarks by stating that it was a twin victory for BJP in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh and in reality it is a jolt for Congress.

  • BJP Won due to Rigged EVMs: Hardik

He urged the fellow opposition parties to take the matter of rigged EVMs forward.

He even went further to advocate the use of ballot papers for fighting elections. To support his argument, he further added that the countries like Germany, Japan and Israel use the same despite being highly advanced.

Counting of votes has already begun and according to early leads, the BJP is leading in eight seats, while Congress is ahead in two seats. A 46.42% turnout has been recorded in the Kheda region while a similar 45% was recorded in Banaskantha for Gujarat polls, up till 2 PM.

  • Rahul Deemed Modi's Comment Unacceptable

Congress President Rahul Gandhi stated that he would never say anything offensive about PM Modi. He told the media that he has even suspended Mani Shankar Aiyar after his 'neech' comment aimed at the PM. However, the Congress scion said the recent insult hurled at the ex-party president Dr. Manmohan Singh was unacceptable. Modi accused Congress for involving Pakistan in Gujarat polls. He stated earlier that the Congress leaders, among whom Mr. Singh was also included, met with Pakistani leaders. Now, Manmohan Singh too has asked Modi to apologise to the whole country.

  • Modi Draws Flak from Pawar over Pakistan Reference

After Congress president's 'unacceptable' comment on PM Modi's accusation of the party's involvement with Pakistani leaders, Sharad Pawar too has crticised the PM. Modi earlier stated that a meeting was held between the Congress leaders and the Pakistani officials at Mani Shankar Aiyar's Delhi residence. Manmohan Singh was also at the meeting. Later, Modi's accusation turned into implicating a link between Mr. Singh and Pakistan. Mr. Singh now has demanded an apology. However, BJP Finance minister refused the demand for an apology and labelled the meeting a 'misadventure'.

With the date of Gujarat result 2017 drawing closer, it remains to be seen how this would impact the elections.

  • BJP to Look to Tribal Community for Support

The Congress seems to get a better hold of Gujarat polls as both Hardik Patel and Alpesh Thakor are urging their fellow caste members to not vote for BJP. Patel seats alone amount to 70 of the total 182 seats of Gujarat and the Thakor community forms about 20% of the population.

However, BJP too can find its support in a minority like the tribal community. The party brought focus on the Adivasi/tribal community, which forms the essential 15% of the population in the state.

In Gujarat, 27 seats are reserved for the tribal community. Earlier, they supported Congress; however, in 2002, the saffron party won more seats in the community under Modi rule.

  • Rahul Gandhi: Results will be Zabardast

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has just completed the three-month long election campaign for the Gujarat polls, appeared optimistic about the results. He went on to say that the Gujarat result is going to be 'zabardast'. The Gandhi scion, who has done everything from visiting temples to addressing the fishermen community, is confident of forming the government in the poll-bound state. He supported his views with the anger the Patel and Dalit communities harbour for the saffron party. Later, he also thanked the people of Gujarat for the love and support, recalling the hospitality he has received over the months.

  • Modi's Sea Plane Ride can Disqualify BJP Candidates

The BJP members can get disqualified from running for the Gujarat polls due to Modi's sea-plane ride, if Goa Congress President Shantaram Naik is to be believed. He reasoned that the expense of the ride has to be accommodated in the poll expenditure of the individual BJP candidates. He then added that it would lead only to the disqualification of the candidates as it would cross the expense limit. Each constituency for Lok Sabha elections is allowed a budget of Rs 70 Lakh. With election day and Gujarat results so close, it could spell disaster for the saffron party if the claims by the Goa leader turn true.

  • Will it be a Difficult Win for Congress in BJP Ruled State?

Congress, which appears confident to win the Gujarat polls on Patidar and other communities votes, will also have to deal with a fair share of obstacles in the state, which is under the saffron rule for over two decades. The BJP has a track record of winning in Gujarat with the majority of votes. In the last assembly elections of 2012, the Gujarat results revealed 115 seats for BJP out of 182 Assembly seats. In votes too, the BJP was way ahead than Congress with a victory margin of around 26,236 votes. In urban areas of Gujarat, the BJP practically swept the polls. Congress rides on issues like incumbency, unemployment and other issues to dethrone the saffron party form the state. Election results would be a fair measure of the effectiveness of their strategy.

  • PM Garners Huge Response from Sea-plane Ride

The PM made a spectacular presence through his sea-plane ride. Modi who found a new way of reaching the masses, flew over the poll-bound state from Sabarmati river to Mehsana, after the roadshow was denied by the police. He waved to the cheering crowd from the footboard of the plane at the bank of the river. He also waved the people from the footboard of the SUV after de-boarding. He made a Twitter appeal to people to vote for the BJP to have the same party in power at both the centre and the state. He also appealed that the lies spread by the opposition have hurt the sentiments of every Gujarati and they would respond to them through votes on the Gujarat results day.

  • Rigged EVMS still a Haunting Issue for Gujarat

On the eve of the second phase of Gujarat polls, tampering of EVMs still remains a topic of concern for many Muslims in the poll-bound state. The voters are concerned that their votes will be cast in someone else's favour and their favoured party will not receive their vote. The issue of rigged EVMs earlier surfaced during the first phase of the polls, where irrespective of the button pressed on the machine, the vote always went in the favour of BJP candidates. Many expressed their fear and helplessness in the Chhota Udaipur region of Gujarat. Some even shared the sentiment that ballot papers were far more reliable solutions to the voting.

  • PM was Denied Permission for Roadshows by Police

The Ahmedabad police commissioner AK Singh has refused the roadshows by both the country CM and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi. The commissioner stated that the road shows like these can disturb the law and order situation in the state. He cleared that the order was passed in view of Election Commission guidelines. A strict legal recourse action would be taken if the roadshows are held in any part of the poll-bound state. However, the permission to hold public meetings is granted. Rallies are being conducted by both the parties for the upcoming Gujarat polls second phase. Hardik Patel too will be holding a rally in Ahmedabad.

  • Hardik Patel Holds Roadshows Against Police Order

Gujarat election 2017: PAAS leader Hardik Patel carried out roadshows in Gujarat against the order of the police. The police had denied permission to even PM Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for carrying out roadshows in the poll-bound state on account of traffic congestion and maintaining law and order situation in the area. Despite this, the roadshow by Patel for Gujarat polls continued from Bopal to Nikol. His supporters gathered at various places and greeted the masses and expressed support for the Patidar community during the roadshow.

Police Commissioner A K Singh commented on the situation and said this was a violation of the condition and legal action is bound to be taken.

  • PM Clarifies the Crony Capitalism Blame by Congress

PM Modi finally retorted to the crony capitalism accusations by the Congress president Rahul Gandhi. In a recent rally at Sabarmati Riverfront for Gujarat polls, he explained how the face of Gujarat has changed. He pointed out that once a dry river bed, it has changed into a full-fledged riverfront now. He referred to it as 'vikas' (development). He stated that he is focussing on the cleanliness of the state and he knows the problems of people as he grew among them. He also declared that he took up around Rs 9 lakh crore worth of projects for the development of the state.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who is campaigning for the second phase of Gujarat polls, attacked BJP over several issues regarding national sales tax, Gujarat development model, and an alleged case of corruption by Jay Shah. He also lashed out at the BJP party for high unemployment and lack of electricity in the poll-bound state. PM Modi, on the other hand, accused Congress of involving Pakistan in the polls. The Gandhi scion is rallying in the poll-bound state and rallies at Viramgam, Tharad, Gandhinagar and Savli have already been held as Navsarjan Yatra.

  • PM Drew Mockery after Sea-Plane Plan

After the Ahmedabad police did not allow roadshows, Modi took the air route. He also drew the attention towards the development by tweeting that with all the rail and road connectivity, efforts have been made for water harnessing. His recent sea-plan tour, however, drew mockery from the opposition, who labelled the whole situation as 'Hawa Hawai'. Other than mockery, the other reaction was surprise, expressed through Twitter by former J&K CM Omar Abdullah who wondered how the security guidelines did not prohibit PM from boarding a single-engine plane. He even pointed out that not even Z+ protectee is allowed in such an aircraft.

  • Why is North Gujarat a Lost Battle for BJP?

The situation in northern Gujarat seems grim for the BJP. The northern part stands different from the other regions of Gujarat mainly due to three reasons. First, the Congress won in this part of Gujarat in the last Gujarat polls of 2012. Secondly, this region has Patel community in a majority. And if heavily crowded rallies of Patidar agitation leader, Hardik Patel are any indication, the saffron party is highly likely to lose the public support in this area. The third prominent factor is Thakor vote. Thakor community, which forms a major part of OBC, is populated in the north. Alpesh Thakor's rise and his unrelenting support for Congress, therefore, is a chief factor for mobilising the vote away from BJP.

  • Rahul Accuses BJP of Lack of Development

In a heated jibe war between the Congress and BJP, the soon to be Congress' president, Rahul Gandhi accused BJP of losing focus from development. In recent reports, Gandhi pointed out that Modi brings focus on his brand name rather than discussing the major issues the poll-bound state has been dealing for years. He stated that Modi used to talk about issues like education, heath, jobs and more but now he has gone mum on all the burning topics. He expressed that the reason for this is the long trail of broken promises by the saffron party. He went on to add that the public does not believe them anymore and their only strategy is to use the name of Modi for Gujarat polls.

  • BJP mobilizing other castes in the OBC to help them in the Gujarat elections

The first phase of polling in Gujarat is underway. However, the question uppermost on everyone’s mind is that how will the Patel factor impact the outcome of the elections.

The Patels form around 15 percent of the voters in the state and can definitely have a significant impact on the fortunes of the various parties contesting in the elections. The BJP is wary of this. In the first phase of elections, the BJP will witness a tough battle in Saurashtra, which is a Patel bastion, as well as Rajkot, where this community has an influence.

Nevertheless, the BJP strategists are making all possible efforts to ensure that the party gets a comfortable victory in the elections. For this, they are mobilizing other castes in the OBC community to make up for the lost votes and also help them to easily cruise through the elections. The OBCs can play a vital role as of the 182 seats in the assembly, they have an influence in around 110 seats.

Dang district in Gujarat is struggling to succeed and rid itself of poverty under the development model of the state. The poverty and health statistics in the district do not look very good. Around 75 percent of the population that lives in the rural parts of the district are living under the poverty line of Rs 356 per person. In the cities, it is only marginally better at Rs 538 per person. The district is also faring badly in terms of health issues. According to the National Family Health Survey of 2015-16, 48.1 percent of the children aged five and below were stunted and 72.2 percent of the women were suffering from anemia. To make matters worse, just 44.3 percent of the children aged 2 and below were fully immunized. All this is despite the fact that the district has made investments in health infrastructure. However, health is a major cause of concern among the entire state.  Gujarat is a prosperous state, which is ranked fifth in India in terms of per capita income. However, in terms of infant morality, the state is ranked at a 17 out of the 29 states in the country. Every year, some 34 out of 1,000 children die.   Gujarat has done well economically; however, Dang is struggling. The district is facing unemployment, which is forcing many people to migrate to other areas or states in search of jobs.

The Congress recently came under fire after petroleum minister Mani Shankar Aiyar called PM Modi 'Neech Aadmi'. The remark soon turned a gaffe for the Congress party leader who commented this in response to Modi's accusation of mobilizing votes by Congress in the name of B R Ambedkar.
In a retort to the comment, Modi said that the public would answer them through the ballot box. Later, BJP president Amit Shah and Union finance minister Arun Jaitley too criticised the Congress.

  • Gujarat Election Survey: Clear Win for the BJP
With Gujarat polls in full swing, BJP is highly likely to win in the poll-bound state, if the elections surveys are to be believed. However, it is estimated that the party would not be able to achieve its target of 150 seat mark. The Gujarat election prediction puts the party at 111 seats win in the 182 seat assembly elections. The Congress is estimated to come second with a 68 seat win. The BJP seems to have a hold in many regions of Gujarat, namely Central and South of Gujarat, in addition to Kutch-Saurashtra area. The North Gujarat appears to be a weak point for the saffron party as it is expected to lose 5% of its share of the vote in the area, mainly due to Congress' resurgence.

All the workers and their heads can directly interact with the PM through the call.

  • Close Contest Between BJP and Congress: New Strategy Working For Congress

If recent pre-poll Gujarat election survey 2017 is any indication, there seems to be a lot of progress in favour of Congress. The Gujarat election prediction, however, still suggests a victory for the BJP, but Congress is not far behind, which is a great progress shown by the party since the last two elections. Apparently, the new strategy adopted by the party seems to be working in their favour. First of all, the party shed its anti-Hindu image and embraced the soft-Hindutva. Secondly, they made a deal with the Patel community in regards to giving them the reservation. They have also mobilized the Muslims vote without drawing much attention to their identity

  • Government Reveals Export SOP of 8500 Crore
Ahead of Gujarat Vidhan Sabha Elections, the government has announced around Rs 8500 crore export incentive for labour-intensive services and sectors. The step is viewed as a measure to placate the effects of GST (Goods and Services Tax). The government, which was facing heat from exporters over the decrease in drawback rates and tardy refunds, has tried to blunt the tax impact by increasing the incentives to 4%. The government is, apparently, concerned with negative competition effect on Indian business.
The incentive also includes benefits offered to made-up and ready-made garments. Altogether the sops would see a total 34% rise.

The bookies also stated that betting market for HP poll elections is not of much interest as is Gujarat one since PM is directly linked to the Gujarat elections.

  • Hardik's Quota Deal Appears Cruel Joke to Some
Hardik Patel's claim to get the quota under OBC class after an agreement with Congress is apparently appearing a joke to some. The Patidar leader claimed that the deal will manifest with Articles 46 and 31B of the Constitution. However, after the law gets passed in favour of Patel reservation, it is still required to keep it safe from judicial hurdles, which can get around with parking the legislation under Ninth Schedule of the constitution. However, there are still major roadblocks for that to happen. Firstly, Congress needs to win the Gujarat polls in a state which is under the saffron rule for more than two decades. Secondly, the Modi government's approval is needed if the legislation is to be kept in the Ninth Schedule.
However, if statistics are any indication, many castes fail to qualify the exceptional circumstance criteria of SC to be included in OBC.
