  • BJP Sweeps Gujarat Local Body Polls
    Rubbishing all speculations over the possibility of a negative political fallout for the BJP as a result of its demonetisation policy, the party scored a formidable victory in two municipalities and one taluka (block) panchayat elections apart from the by-elections in 11 municipalities, seven district panchayats and 15 taluka panchayat seats. The BJP won 41 out of 44 seats in Vapi in Valsad district and 27 out of 28 seats in Kanakpur-Kansad (Surat) municipalities. It won 18 out of 22 seats in Gondal taluka Panchayat. The district panchayat by-election results have not caused any major upset for the party either as five out of the seven voted for BJP. The party has secured victory in five talukas while the Congress has won four. Elections on the remaining seats have been postponed due to technical issues.

  • Punjab Assembly Polls 2017: Sidhu's Wife, Pargat Singh Join Congress
    Former hockey Olympian Pargat Singh and cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu joined the Congress officially on 28 November, 2016. Responding to questions from the media on whether her husband Navjot Singh is going to join the Congress too, Navjot Kaur reportedly said, "We are like one soul in two bodies." Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh said that if Mrs Sidhu is in Congress, it is most likely Mr Sidhu is going to join the party as well.

  • Big Win for BJP in Maharashtra Civic Body Polls
    The BJP scored a significant win in the fiercely contested Maharashtra Civic Body Polls. All the mainstream parties had called these the “mini-assembly election”. The win comes as a major setback to the Congress and NCP which had been dominating the municipal bodies till now. The BJP-led Centre’s demonetisation policy had dominated the campaign of all the parties. The BJP had presented demonetisation as a mechanism for clean-up of the system. Elections were held to the state's 147 municipal councils and 17 nagar panchayats in the first phase on November 27,2016. The second phase of these elections will be held on 14 December in 14 municipal councils.
