  • BJP to contest 170 seats in Bihar

    A day after two of its allies said seat sharing in Bihar must conclude within a week, a BJP leader announced on Tuesday that his party will contest 170 of the 243 assembly seats. "The BJP will contest nearly 170 seats, there is no question of anything less than that," Ashwani Kumar Choubey, an MP and a former minister, said here. Choubey was replying to statements from leaders of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and the Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) that the BJP must contest only 102 seats and leave the remaining 141 to its three allies. "There is no one in the country to advise the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi about seat sharing within the NDA," said Choubey, a votary of Hinduvta politics. The third BJP ally, the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) of former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, on Tuesday said the BJP should contest only 122 seats. "They must distribute the remaining seats among its three allies to defeat the grand alliance of JD-U, RJD and Congress," HAM leader Brishen Patel said. Patel asked the LJP and RLSP to "behave gently" to ensure the defeat of the Nitish Kumar-Lalu Prasad combine. Source: IANS

  • Modi hails BJP win in Bengaluru BBMP elections

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed the BJP's winning show in the Bengaluru civic polls, saying people's faith in his party "is humbling and gladdening". "People's continuous faith in the BJP is humbling and gladdening," Modi tweeted as results showed the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the Congress in the election. "We are fully committed to fulfilling (the) aspirations of 125 crore Indians," he said. The prime minister said after similar civic polls wins in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the Bengaluru results "complete a hat-trick of wins for the BJP".   • Manjhi elected HAM's president, resigns from JD-U

    Jitan Ram Manjhi, former Bihar chief minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha's leader, was elected national president of the party after resigning on Tuesday from the primary membership of the JD-U and from the Bihar assembly. "Manjhi has formally resigned from JD-U's primary membership and as a legislator. He was unanimously elected national president of Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) in a meeting of the national executive here," HAM's spokesperson Danish Rizwan said here. Source: IANS

  • Congress MLA dead in Telangana

    Senior Congress lawmaker Patola Kishta Reddy died following cardiac arrest on Tuesday. He was 74 and is survived by his wife and four sons. Reddy was shifted to a private hospital here after he complained of chest pain. The doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. He was representing Narayanked constituency of Medak district in the Telangana state legislative assembly. Kishta Reddy, a four-time MLA, was chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the legislature. His body was shifted to Narayankhed for the last rites. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao condoled the death of Reddy. In a condolence message, he recalled the services of the Congress leader as a legislator and PAC chairman. Source: IANS

  • Manjhi quits as legislator

    Jitan Ram Manjhi, former Bihar chief minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha's leader, resigned on Tuesday from the primary membership of the JD-U and also from the Bihar assembly. "Manjhi has formally resigned from the primary membership of the JD-U and also as a legislator," HAM's spokesperson Danish Rizwan said here. Manjhi's HAM has joined hands with the BJP led NDA in Bihar ahead of state polls. He has pledged to work to ensure the defeat of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal-United and Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal. His resignation came ahead of HAM's national executive meeting here on Tuesday to chalk out the party's strategy for the polls.

  • BJP maintains lead in Bengaluru civic poll

    The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintained its lead in the Bengaluru civic corporation's election as the counting of votes crossed the half-way mark in 197 wards across the city on Tuesday. As per trends available for 195 wards at 1 p.m., BJP was leading in 99 wards, Congress in 74, Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) in 14 and Independents in eight. Polling was held in 197 of the 198 wards on Saturday in which 49.3 percent voting was registered, as over 36 lakh of the 74 lakh electorate exercised their franchise in the day-long election, marred by some irregularities and rain.   • PM condoles deaths in Andhra train accident

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condoled the loss of lives in Bangalore City-Nanded express train accident in Andhra Pradesh. "My thoughts are with the families of all those who lost their lives in the unfortunate accident of the Bangalore City-Nanded express," the prime minister said in a statement. "My condolences to the family of Karnataka MLA (legislator) Shri Venkatesh Naik. He will be remembered for his service to society," he added.     The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led in the Bengaluru civic corporation's election, according to trends from counting of votes in 197 wards across the city on Tuesday. Three hours after the counting began at 8 a.m. in 27 centres across the city, the BJP led in 67 wards, the Congress in 47, Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) in 10 and independents in five, as per trends available from 129 wards.   • Counting of Bengaluru civic body's votes today

    Counting of votes polled on Saturday to elect representatives of the Bengaluru civic corporation will be held on Tuesday amid tight security, an official said. "Arrangements have been made at 27 centres across the city to count votes polled in 197 civic wards and results are expected by late afternoon," Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner Kumar G. Naik told reporters here on Monday. Around 49.31 percent of polling was registered from 197 wards across the city, as over 36-lakh of the total 74 lakh voters exercised franchise in the day-long election, marred by irregularities and rains. "Counting will begin at 8 a.m. and will take about two hours to complete, with two or three rounds in each ward depending on the number of votes polled," Naik said. Source:IANS
