  • J&K: Voter Turnout 34% in Anantnag Bypolls
    South Kashmir's Anantnag assembly constituency recorded a turnout of 33.8 per cent in the bypoll held on 22 June. The turnout was 6 per cent less than that of last election. While voters were seen thronging polling booths in rural pockets, the turnout was very low in urban areas. The bypoll is critical for chief minister Mehbooba Mufti as she has to get elected to the assembly within six months of taking office. The seat fell vacant after the death of former CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

    BSP leader Swami Prasad Maurya quit the party yesterday accusing party chief Mayawati of deceiving Dalits and taking bribes in exchange for election tickets. The party now faces the tough task of finding a new backward-caste face with only few months to go for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Following the expulsion of former minister Babu Singh Kushwaha in 2011, Maurya was strategically groomed and mobilised as the party's OBC face and attract OBC votes.

  • Akhilesh Yadav to Expand UP Cabinet on June 27
    According to official reports, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav is going to expand his cabinet on June 27. While rumours of a cabinet rejig had been doing the rounds for some time, it got confirmed only after Governor Ram Naik fixed the time for oath-taking on 27 June. The Parliamentary Board of ruling Samajwadi Party will meet and discuss potential candidates for the ministry on 25 June. This is going to be the seventh cabinet expansion of the four-and-a-half-year-old SP government.
