Gujarat: Village Panchayat Poll Schedule DeclaredThe schedule for the village panchayat poll has finally been declared by the Election Commission. Polls for over 1420 villages will take place on February 4 and the counting will begin on February 6.The announcement has come after a few days of Assembly elections in the state in which Congress had a clear edge over the saffron party in the rural areas. The formal notification was issued on January 5 and January 20 will mark the last day for filing nomination forms.Both BJP and Congress have started preparation for the polls. Meghalaya Assembly Elections: NPP Confident of WinningNPP leader Conrad K Sangma expressed confidence that the current ruling party, Congress, will face a defeat from his party in the upcoming Meghalaya Assembly election 2018, which is tentatively scheduled in February. He even claimed the party is going to win with a majority. He further added that the party had prepared a mission document for the state which effectively consists of all the issues pertaining to the welfare of the people.He also juxtaposed the Congress performance and its rule over the years. Meghalaya: VVPAT Working Demonstrated to Politicians, MediaMeghalaya will use the VVPATs (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) for the first time in the coming Meghalaya elections. In an attempt to educate the electorates, the West Garo Hills has made preparations for demonstrating the procedure. The deputy commissioner of the region, Ram Singh, has held a demonstration in front of the political representative of all the parties, in addition to media persons. Singh explained that the VVPATs would allow the voters to briefly see the printed slip of the vote cast after they vote. Rajasthan: By-elections can Prove to be a Deciding Factor for Assembly ElectionsThe by-elections in Rajasthan are being seen as a litmus test for the big parties like the BJP and Congress. The elections are also labeled as the semi-final for the Assembly elections scheduled this year. The BJP, however, is facing some turbulence from some communities. There is a hate sentiment in various caste groups, traders, and farmers for the saffron party and it can turn into an advantage for the Congress.The by-polls are scheduled to be held on January 29 for the Assembly constituencies of Mandalgarh, Lok Sabha seats of Alwar and Ajmer.
