Paswan Labels Himself Cementing Force in NDALok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan has called himself the cementing force in the ruling NDA in Bihar. He said that “So far, the talks which I had with Nitish Kumar and senior BJP leaders in Delhi last time, I can tell you that there is no problem within (Bihar) NDA,” he told reporters here. “I am optimistic that the NDA will remain intact (in Bihar)…I am a cementing force. I am there to keep the NDA intact.”He added that the poll strategy could be finalised in a couple of minutes if the coalition partners “share the same view.” However, he did not elaborate on party's strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls due next year.2018-07-07 11:17:00 AM
EC Can Hold Simultaneous Polls for Lok Sabha and State AssembliesExperts are unclear whether the Election Commission of India (ECI) would hold simultaneous polls to Assemblies of the states, which have their terms expiring either in 2018's second half or 2019's second half, and Lok Sabha. Section 14(2) in the Representation of the People Act, 1951, allows EC to conduct elections to both Lok Sabha and state Assembly six months before their term expires. However, former Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath is not in favour of using the Act for this purpose. He said “It’s a mechanical provision. It can’t be taken for granted either for postponing or advancing the polls, unless the particular House is vacant or dissolved. EC can’t invoke this provision curtailing the respective terms of the House.” He also called using this provision to hold simultaneous polls undemocratic.2018-07-07 11:13:15 AM
