Manipur Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) Election 2017

The elections to the Manipur assembly elections 2017 were scheduled in two phases on March 4, 2017 and March 8, 2017. In the first phase 38 constituencies went to the polls while the rest 22 would go to polls on March 8. Manipur saw heavy voting in the first phase where as many as 84% electorate exercised their franchise. There were 168 candidates in the first phase and 98 in the second. A total of 2794 polling stations were set up for the elections.

This time the incumbent Congress party is facing a tough challenge from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and People's Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA), the new political party launched by activist Irom Sharmila. The economic blockade of Manipur as well as corruption have been the major issues in this elections.

About Manipur Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha)

The first Manipur State Assembly was elected in July 1948 on the basis of adult franchise and it consisted of 53 members. It was, however, dissolved in October, 1949 when Manipur was merged with the Dominion Government of India. Manipur became a Part C State and it was administered by the President of India through a Chief Commissioner or Lieutenant Governor who acted as the president's agent.

Manipur became a Union Territory of India under the Union Territorial Council Act, 1956. Under the Act, election of 30 members to the Manipur Territorial Council was held in 1957. The Territorial Council was eventually converted into the Territorial Legislative Assembly in June 1963. It comprised 30 elected and 2 nominated members. Manipur was conferred full statehood through the North-Eastern Areas (Re-organization) Act, 1971 on 21st January 1972. The Manipur State Legislative Assembly now has 60 members. The normal tenure of the Assembly is five years, unless dissolved sooner.
