Assembly elections are due in the state of Kerala on May 16 this year. This state has traditionally been a stronghold of the two main rival coalitions, the centrist UDF (United Democratic Front) and the leftist LDF (Left Democratic Front). The Congress-led UDF won by a really narrow margin of just four seats in the last assembly elections. The LDF is determined to clinch power this time. The BJP's entry has queered the pitch for both the UDF and LDF in the state.

The BJP has decided to field all veteran leaders of the party for the coming elections in Kerala. The party has already declared the names of candidates for 22 of the total 140 constituencies. BJP-led NDA has decided to announce its candidates for the Kerala assembly polls on 27 March. After the party finalised seat-sharing deal with the Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS), the Kerala BJP president, K. Rajasekheran said that the BDJS will contest in 37 seats. BJP state chief Kummanam Rajasekharan will make his electoral debut from Vattiyoorkavu in Thiruvananthapuram. Erstwhile Union minister O. Rajagopal will contest from Nemom constituency of Thiruvananthapuram district.

The Congress party, which leads the United Democratic Front alliance, is worried as the coalition seems to be falling apart in the run-up to the state assembly elections. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), an important component in the ruling UDF, has announced its first list of 20 assembly election candidates. The party has decided to contest 24 seats. There are five new faces in the list along with the five state ministers. Rest are all sitting legislators.

The Trinamool Congress has announced its candidates for 70 assembly constituencies in Kerala. The party's Kerala state president Manoj Sankaranellur confirmed that the TMC will nominate candidates in all 140 Assembly constituencies and that the second list will be released soon with the approval of Mamata Banerjee.
