- Separatist group Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front’s leader Muhammad Yasin Malik was taken into protective custody by J&K police after he asked Kashmiris to boycott the upcoming assembly elections.
- For promoting tolerance, peace, and creation of conducive environment for Kashmiris to determine their own future, Jammu Kashmir International Peoples Alliance was formed. This new alliance will speak for Kashmiri people living in J&K and Pak-Occupied Kashmir. This alliance was formed against the ‘Million March’ protest of pro-Pakistani groups.
- Ambika Soni, General Secretary of AICC, has said that Rahul Gandhi will be the star campaigner in J&K. She also said that INC will contest all the assembly seats of Jammu and Kashmir.
- The first candidate name list was released by the Congress. This list consists of 15 candidate names. To see candidate list click here.
- National Conference is finding it tough to find a safe seat for the current Chief Minister of J&K, Omar Abdullah. The probable constituencies are Sonawar and Ganderbal.
- In an interesting turning of events, former National Conference leaders joined Peoples Democratic Party. The former NC leaders who joined its rival party are Abdul Ahad Tantray, Dr Gazzanfar Ali, Mohammad Abdulla Sofi, Qadir Chaloo, Gulzar Ahmad Wani, Dr Abdul Gani, and Ghulam Nabi Bhat.
- J&K unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has finalised committee for managing as well as campaigning during the upcoming 5-phase state election. While Sat Sharma will be the secretary, Dr Nirmal Singh is the President of the committee.
- The upcoming assembly election is going to be a multi-dimensional battle among most of the established political parties of the state because most of them are going solo this time. The main contenders will be National Conference, PDP, NCP, and BJP. However, INC is still silent about its strategy.
- Most of the main political parties of J&K have not yet decided upon the candidates for 87 assembly seats of the state.
- Shakeel Ahmed Beig, DIG Police of Jammu-Kathua range, has said that the police force is completely equipped and well prepared to conduct free and fair election. Setting up of Quick Reaction Teams have also been announced by the DIG.
- For strengthening the security grid, 520 companies or more than 50,000 of para-military personnel will be deployed in Jammu and Kashmir during polls. The paramilitary personnel will be from RPF, CISF, SSB, ITBP, BSF, and CRPF.
- BJP in J&K has decided to woo young voters by using social media channels for replicating recent electoral successes of Haryana and Maharashtra.
- BJP has targeted the current NC government of J&K by saying that the ministers disappeared during flood relief operations.
- Mufti Mohammad Sayeed of PDP said that 2014 assembly election of J&K is going to be a watershed moment in formation of a stable and sustainable government.
- CPIM has said that J&K needs a leader who helps in rehabilitating flood affected people.
- Jammu and Kashmir election will be held in 5 phases, starting on November 25 and ending on December 20, 2014.The other dates are December 2, December 9, and December 14. Counting will take place on December 23.
- As Per ECI directives, the polling will take place in the designated polling station on the concerned dates from 8am to 4pm.
- Security personnel to the extent of 565 companies have been sought by the Jammu and Kashmir government during polls.
- On November 25, voting will take place for 15 assembly segments, spread over 7 districts. The constituencies are Ganderbal, Kangan, Sonawari, Bandipora, Gurez, Inderwal, Kishtwar, Zanskar, Kargil, Leh, Nobra, Banihal, Ramban, Bhaderwah, and Doda.
- This assembly election will witness yet another multi-cornered contest as BJP has already announced its decision of contesting it solo. They will field 87 candidates in all the constituencies of J and K.
- INC seems to be in a dilemma and not yet decided upon any kind of alliance. They are expected to announce their candidates in the coming one or two days time.
