About Antagarh Assembly (Vidha Sabha) Constituency – Bye Elections 2014

By-election in Antagarh assembly constituency of Chhattisgarh is scheduled to be held on September 13, 2014. However, announcement of result for this assembly segment has been postponed to September 20, 2014 due to weather conditions. By-election is taking place in Antagarh because sitting MLA from BJP Vikram Usendi got elected to the parliament last May. While Bhojraj Nag is the BJP candidate, Roopdhar Pundo is the candidate of Ambedkarite Party of India (API) in the coming by-election. The contest was originally between Congress and BJP but sudden withdrawal of candidature by INC’s Manturam Pawar along with other independent candidates changed the entire scenario. It seems BJP will have a cakewalk here. Last two assembly elections were won by BJP. During 2013 Assembly election, Vikram Usendi of BJP won over Manturam Pawar of Congress by 5171 votes.

Antagarh is located in Kanker district of Bastar. Halba, Gondwana, and Bengali communities play important roles during Antagarh assembly elections. Some of the main political issues of all time include demand for forest land transfer to tribals, issuance of ration cards, reservation for tribal students, etc. ST and SC population together account for more than 50 per cent of total population in this constituency.
