With only two weeks to go for the MCD elections that would be held on April 23, 2017, the political parties in the fray are doing everything to woo the Delhi voters. But Delhi voter is not an easy customer. Delhi the capital city has great demographic diversity. Besides, it has a huge population of government employees and their families. Apart from this Delhi is habited by people from almost all the states of the country, from north East to Down south, Delhi has a big number of migrants living in Delhi who not only vote to express themselves but also to ensure their rights. The Delhi elections must be fought on various levels by the political parties and balance all the factors that can make or break their chances.
The BJP, for instance, has made Manoj Tiwari, the Bhojpuri star as its Delhi chief to woo the people from Poorvanchal who dominate in a number of wards in South and East Delhi.
The BJP is indeed harping upon the star power and the charisma of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a big way. They know for sure that they do not have much to offer in terms of development and governance. They are indeed fighting anti-incumbency of two terms and unpopularity of their own councilors who have been discredited by their indulgence in corruption. The party is also roping in big stars and relying on upon the popularity of Adityanath Yogi who would be campaigning in the capital days before the elections.
Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party is trumpeting its own achievements in the Delhi assembly and promising several freebies and concessions if it is voted to power. They are promising to do away with the residential property tax if voted to power. Besides, their emphasis is on providing the clean administration and clean up the mess created by the BJP in the MCD
Congress has promised to address the concerns of the people including sanitation, pension distribution, and health problems. It is also against the imposition of house tax. It also wants to improve the condition of MCD schools and provide them drinking water facilities, clean toilets and recruit more teachers. Congress has also promised that it will also ensure the payment of dues, to sanitation workers, and regularization of temporary staff. Besides they want to make Delhi “cleanest and most beautiful” city in the world.
Besides, it feels that MCD is drained off its funds by the corrupt administration and so wants to streamline the toll tax collection, parking lots which are being controlled by mafias. It also wants to end the scam of unauthorized hoardings.
Yogendra Yadav-led Swaraj India is for a clean environment of Delhi and wants to make it pollution free. It has also promised re-categorization of colonies, recovery of tax dues, adopting a citizen’s charter that will outline a timeframe for delivery of key services, online facilities etc. However, theirs may be more of a token presence which may not fetch them many seats.
Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) has promised to legalize all unauthorized colonies. If voted to power it will address issues like unemployment, power & water supply & sanitation. This indeed gets a favorable response from the residents of such unauthorized colonies.
Who Delhi actually votes for would only be known only after the results are out as the Delhites are smart enough to prove the pre-poll surveys wrong.
