Airports in Karnataka

Karnataka is a developing state and airports play a major role in contributing towards its evolution. There are several airports in Karnataka. Let us discover the air routes and find out all the major airports to reach Karnataka.

Kempegowda International Airport

Kempegowda International Airport is the busiest airport in Karnataka situated in the capital of the state Bengaluru.Inaugurated by Siddaramaiah & Ajith Singh, the airport is constructed over a stretch of 400 acres of land and is located about 40 kilometres north of the city near Devanhalli village and serves perpetual flights for London, Dubai, Hong Kong etc. Numerous domestic flights for Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Goa, etc are also available from this airport. The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation(BMTC) operates a shuttle service from 9 different locations of Bengaluru to the airport. A Namma Metro link between the city and airport is planned which will provide the place with a good railway connection.

Mangalore Airport

Mangalore Airport, also known as Bhape Airport, is located in Mangaluru and is the second largest airport in the state of Karnataka. It is located about 13 kilometres away from the north-east of the city, near Bhajpe. Mangalore airport was the first in Karnataka to have 2 runways and was ranked 12th amongst the airports with international traffic in India. Mangalore Airport was opened on December 25 1951 when the Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru arrived on a DC-3 Dakota aircraft. It was known as Bajpe Aerodrome at that time. The airport is well-connected to nearby railway stations and local attractions like Kadri Manjunath Temple, Kudroli Gokarnath Temple, Manasa Amusement and Water Park etc.

Hubballi Airport

Situated on Gokul Road this airport is located in the west of Hubli. The airport is spread over in 369 acres and serves the twin cities of Hubli and Dharwad. A new terminal was inaugurated by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju recently in December 2017 for better connectivity. The place has a decent accessibility with railway stations and tourist attractions like Unkal Lake, Indira Gandhi Glass House Garden, Chandramouleshwara Temple. The bus stand is also situated 6 kilometres away from the airport terminal.

Belgaum Airport

Belgaum Airport also known as Sambra airport is located about 10 kilometres in the east of Belgaum city near Sambra village. .It was recently renovated in September and was inaugurated by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju.  This domestic airport is associated only with SpiceJet and has frequent flights to Bengaluru, Mangalore, Mumbai etc. Taxi services are available to various heritage locations along with popular tourist destinations. Nearest railway station is 12 kilometres away. Adventure activities like paragliding and boating can also be done in areas located nearby Belgaum,

Mysore Airport

Mysore Airport which is also known as Mandakalli Airport is located 10 kilometres south to Mysore city in a village called Mandakalli.  The airport is built and developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in the year 2010 and was inaugurated by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa. It is a place with great accessibility and receives only charter or VIP flights. It has a direct connectivity with National Highway 766, Mysore ring road and other places.

Other than these airports, there are some more important airports like Jindal Vijaynagar Airport, HAL Bangalore Airport, Jakkur Aerodrome, Yelahanka Air Force Station, etc. There are some upcoming airports like Bellary Airport, Biddar Airport, Bijapur Airport, Shimoga Airport etc. which are going to serve the state of Karnataka in the future.
