  • Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that the Indian government has initiated proceedings against Indian citizens who have locked away their ill-gotten money abroad. The proceedings have been started with a Special Investigating Team (SIT) to find the ways to recover the black money.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives of people who were killed in the Malaysian airline tragedy. He said that India stands by the families of the victims in this sad period. In a tweet, he said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives on board Flight MH17. We stand with them in this hour of grief”.
  • The Union Minister Piyush Goyal, reacting to power tariff hike announced by Delhi power tariff regulator, said that it is exploring options to give relief to city consumers. He tweeted, “We will certainly find ways to see how consumers will be given further relief”. New power tariff rates became effective from Thursday. It is likely to bring a hike of 8.3% across all kind of consumers.
  • Jaitley presents Rs. 36,776 crore Delhi budget for the present fiscal year. He has kept the tax rates unchanged, besides proposing a new hospitality hospital and 100 ambulances for victims of accidents. He also announced power subsidy of Rs. 260 crore for small consumers, among others.
  • According to media reports, PM Narendra Modi was on the same flight route on which Malaysian airliner MH17 Boeing 777 was hit by a missile over war-torn Eastern Ukraine near the Russian border, which killed all 298 people on board. The flight had taken off from Frankfurt, Germany. Responding to the news, the Indian government said that there was no threat to PM’s Air Force One.
  • The US sought strong relationship with the Modi administration. It highlighted the strong role that India will play in shaping the Asian landscape. In a hearing on “Indispensable Partners: Reenergizing US-India Ties”, US point person for South Asia Nisha Desai Biswal said, “Successive administrations have made the strategic bet that a rising India is in the US interest”.
